Enisei sink against Brive in Sochi’s dreadful conditions

Enisei-STM didn’t manage to overcome the flooded pitch of Yug Stadium and badly lost 8-43 against Brive’s nearly best side.

Enisei-STM expected a dry and fast pitch to play its usual expanded game. Instead they took a stormy weather. Already concerned about their game plan in such conditions, Russians were caught by a faster than light opening try from Brive after 20 seconds of play. Just after the kick-off, Vasil Lobzhanidze kicked over behind a ruck, Denis Simplikevich came to late to take the ball before the rebound, Taku Ngwenya got back the ball at the 40 and passed to Nicolas Bézy who run over for the try. Gaëtan German added the conversion to already lead 7-0 at the 2nd.


After a Germain’s penalty kick at the 10th, Brive were already in front by 10. While knock-ons were piling up, Russians found solutions to put the pressure on Brive’s backs. Anton Rudoy scored within a maul following a scrum after a blocked kick in the end zone. (5-10, 18th). Few seconds later, the referee added misery to the Russian fate with an horrible mistake. Following a run, Taku Ngwenya knocked on the ball, ball came to Jurijs Baranovs who kicked it, Arnaud Mignardi blocked the kick. The action should have stopped here but Mignardi followed the block kick in the end zone and Alexey Schcherban grabed him. The referee totally forgot the knock-on, awarded a penalty to Brive and gave a yellow card to Schcherban. During the sin-bin, Gaëtan Germain added two penalty and Guillaume Namy scored Brive’s second try on a beautiful scrum-half kick behind a ruck. Brive lead increased to 15 points (8-23, 32th)…


Few minutes in the second half, while storm intensifying, Guillaume Ribes scored Brive’s third try on a very efficient maul following a 5 meter line-out. Germain have added two penalties just before and after half-time (8-36, 44th). Enisei continued to fight, had several scoring chances but was unable to finish over the line because of several mistakes. Pitch still get worse. Following Patrick Toetu and François Da Ros entry in front row, Brive started to overwhelm Enisei at scrum but Russians prevent the visitors to score the bonus point. As weather getting even worse in the final 20 minutes, both team traded many kicks with score staying the same. Brive finally surged in the opposite 22 in the final seconds. Benito Masilevu scored an acrobatic try to give a crucial bonus point to Brive at the death.
